Naming of Nouns and Verbs in Aphasia: Preliminary results of a word retrieval task in a sentence context

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Several authors described cases of dissociated impairment in naming nouns and verbs. There are four main accounts of this dissociation: (i) patients may have purely lexical damage which selectively affects verbs or nouns at a late stage of the linguistic processing (phonological or orthographic lexicons) (Rapp & Caramazza, 2002); (ii) the damage affects a lexical device, either at an ortographic-phonological modality-specific level or at a unitary lexical-syntactic level (Levelt et al., 1999; Berndt et al., 1997); (iii) N-V dissociation is not a lexical but a semantic phenomenon (Bird, Howard & Franklin, 2000); (iv) N-V dissociation is due to syntactic damages (Friedmann & Grodzinsky, 2000). To disentangle imageability and grammatical class effects, a new task was developed that allowed to elicit Ns and Vs in a sentence context. The results obtained will permit to address the following three questions: Does imageability play a role in determining N-V

Word-retrieval treatment in aphasia: Effects of sentence context.
Word-retrieval treatment studies in aphasia have reported the greatest influences on picture naming for trained words. To increase treatment effects to untrained words and sentence contexts, we investigated a sentence-reading treatment hierarchy that moves from errorless to generative production of sentences incorporating target nouns and verbs. In an individual with nonfluent aphasia, treatmen...
متن کاملEffect of Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST) on Lexical Retrieval of Content Words in Sentences in Persons with Aphasia.
BACKGROUND: Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST) is a semantic treatment that aims to improve lexical retrieval of content words in sentence context by promoting systematic retrieval of verbs (e.g., measure) and their thematic roles (i.e., agent (doer of the action, e.g., carpenter, chef)) and patient (receiver of the action, e.g., lumber, sugar)). VNeST is influenced by Loverso and col...
متن کاملPatterns of comprehension and production of nouns and verbs in agrammatism: implications for lexical organization.
This study examined the relationship between verb retrieval and verb-argument-structure properties in seven agrammatic aphasic patients using tasks requiring access to the verb's lexicon for both comprehension- and productionlike processes. Results showed intact comprehension of both nouns and verbs and noun naming, but impaired naming of verbs. Subjects also demonstrated near-normal performanc...
متن کاملPhonological facilitation effects on naming latencies and viewing times during noun and verb naming in agrammatic and anomic aphasia.
BACKGROUND Phonological priming has been shown to facilitate naming in individuals with aphasia as well as healthy speakers, resulting in faster naming latencies. However, the mechanisms of phonological facilitation (PF) in aphasia remain unclear. AIMS Within discrete vs. interactive models of lexical access, this study examined whether PF occurs via the sub-lexical or lexical route during no...
متن کاملA Review of Verb Network Strengthening Treatment
This article examines Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST), a relatively new treatment approach for anomia in people with aphasia. The VNeST protocol aims to promote generalization to increased lexical retrieval of untrained words across a hierarchy of linguistic tasks, including single-word naming of nouns and verbs, sentence production, and discourse. The concept of the verb network r...
